Joining Troop 1

Interested in joining Troop 1? Here’s everything you need to know.

Joining as a Scout

If you are crossing over from Lancaster Pack 9, you will be automatically registered with Troop 1 in April. No further action is needed.

  1. If you haven’t already, contact Troop 1 to let us know you’re interested in joining. We can arrange for you to join an upcoming meeting and learn about the Troop.
  2. When you’re ready to join, register with Scouting America. Membership dues are paid directly to Scouting America and provide a 12-month membership.

Joining as an Adult Leader

Adults leaders are critical to the operation of the Troop. Please consider volunteering your time and experience with Troop 1! All adults attending an overnight event must be registered with Troop 1 & Scouting America and have completed the Safeguarding Youth training course.

  1. If you haven’t already, contact Troop 1 to let us know you’re interested in joining.
  2. Print and fill out a paper application form.
  3. Print and fill out a CORI/SORI form.
  4. Pay the $83 registration fee via check made out to “Heart of New England” and mailed to:
    • Attn: Registrar
    • SCOUTING AMERICA
    • Heart of New England Council
    • 394 Pleasantdale Road
    • Rutland, MA 01543
  5. Complete the Safeguarding Youth class:

    • If the above link does not work for you, go to training.scouting.org/catalog, search for “Safeguarding Youth”, and click on the Safeguarding Youth Course.

Meetings

Troop 1 meets every Thursday, 7-8:30pm, on the second floor of the South Lancaster Firehouse. The meetings are held throughout the school year except for vacation weeks, aligned to Nashoba Regional School District calendar. No meetings are held if school is cancelled for inclement weather.

See the Troop Calendar for all of our upcoming meetings and outings. You can also subscribe to our calendar on your phone/computer.

Uniform & Handbook

Scout and adult members of Troop 1 wear the official Scouts BSA uniform for Troop meetings and other events. The uniform consists of:

  • Tan Scouts BSA shirt with green shoulder loops, Troop 1 patch, and Heart of New England Council patch
  • Green Scouts BSA pants or shorts
  • Green scout socks
  • Scout Belt
  • Scout Hat (Optional)
  • Scout Neckerchief (Optional)
  • As scouts earn merit badges, they can add a merit badge sash to their uniform for occasions such as a Court of Honor.

Scouts should have a Scouts BSA Handbook. A cover for the handbook is recommended as it tends to get a lot of wear over the years.

The uniform and handbook can be purchased at local stores such as Moore Lumber & Hardware in Ayer and the New England Scout Shop in Southborough or online.

Medical and Health Forms

Shortly after joining the Troop, all adults and scouts should submit the Scouting America Annual Health and Medical Record on paper to the troop. Parts A & B are required for all outings. Part C, which requires a physicians signature, is needed before attending summer camp or other outings lasting more than 72hrs.
